Dyslexia Advocacy Day in Annapolis

Advocating for the Ready to Read Act. This bill requires universal reading screening each year for students in Pre-K, Kindergarten, and 1st Grade to determine which students are at risk for reading difficulty. Students who flag as “at risk” on the reading screening measures would receive further assessment to determine their areas of need. Areas of need would be addressed with supplemental, targeted reading interventions that are explicit and systematic and teach the emergent and early literacy skills including phonological awareness, phonemic awareness, phonic decoding, oral language, vocabulary and fluency. The content of the instructional intervention is developmentally appropriate, and students are not “forced to learn to read early.”
